Hole location plugs are used to measure the location of a threaded hole in a product, typically with a CMM.

The key feature is the gages are designed to engage the threads on the flanks, not the face of the part. This ensures the accuracy of the measurement independent of other features of the hole or part. Vermont Gage's flexible hole location plugs larger than #10 (M5) are slotted at 90 degree increments, while #10 (M5) and smaller are a solid contruction with front taper covering the entire product tolerance.

The flexible hole location gage is slotted at 90° increments to ensure positive location on the thread flanks regardless of hole size. This feature provides a firm locating grip without pulling the shoulder of the plug up against the hole face thus avoiding any squareness error being transferred to the centerline measurement.
